Every time I think the Prime Video’s God of War cast couldn't get any better, they drop another name that just works. Sonya Walger is officially signing on to play Freya, and if you’re a fan of Lost or For All Mankind, you already know why this is such a win for the show.

The news comes from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, confirming that Walger will recur as the Vanir goddess (a group of gods associated with nature and magic). In the games, Freya is easily one of the most complex characters Kratos ever runs into. She’s a mother, a queen, and a warrior who’s been through a lot, so you need someone who can carry that grief without losing the audience.

A Perfect Choice for the Witch of the Woods

Walger has the range to pull off the Witch of the Woods vibe. We’ve seen her play characters who are tough as nails but deeply human before, which is exactly what Freya needs. The character description for the show sticks close to the source material. She’s Odin’s ex-wife, the former Queen of the Valkyries, and she’s been living as a recluse in Midgard (the realm of humans) for a century.

She is described as strong and insightful, but also filled with regrets after being exiled and cut off from her native land of Vanaheim. If the show follows the 2018 game's path, her relationship with Kratos and Atreus is going to be one of the most important parts of the first season.

Production Is Moving Fast in Vancouver

Production is already underway in Vancouver. The show has a two-season order right out of the gate, which tells me Amazon is all-in on what Ronald D. Moore is putting together. Frederick E.O. Toye is directing the first two episodes, and his work on Shōgun and Fallout proves he knows how to handle a big adaptation.

The series follows Kratos and Atreus as they travel to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos' wife. It’s a journey about a father trying to teach his son how to be a god, while the son tries to teach his father how to be human. Having Walger in the mix as a mentor and a foil for Kratos adds a lot of weight to that dynamic.

Sonya Walger Joins a Stacked God of War Cast

Walger joins a cast that is already looking strong. We have Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Callum Vinson as Atreus, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin. Seeing Walger go up against Patinkin as his ex-wife is something I didn't know I needed until right now.

The rest of the cast includes Ed Skrein as Baldur and the recently added family of Thor and Sif. With filming happening right now, we are hopefully getting closer to seeing what this version of Midgard actually looks like.

Walger joins an extensive list of talent including Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and the trio of Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.
