Prime Video’s upcoming God of War series continues to expand its cast, with Ólafur Darri Ólafsson officially signing on to play Thor. The series is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, with production currently underway in Vancouver.

Ólafsson joins the adaptation as one of its most physically and emotionally complex figures. The series follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they set out to scatter the ashes of Faye, a journey that forces both characters to confront the past and the choices that shaped them. Thor plays a major role in that conflict, carrying the weight of earlier wars and the consequences that followed.

The series has already received a two-season order, signaling long-term plans for the adaptation as it brings PlayStation’s Norse saga to television.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson Takes on the Role of Thor

Ólafsson will portray Thor, the God of Thunder, a figure shaped as much by regret as by strength. In this version of the character, Thor is described as a veteran of countless battles whose actions in a past war continue to haunt him. Once a loyal enforcer of Asgard, he now lives with the fallout of those choices, distancing himself from his family and struggling with the damage left behind.

Rather than focusing solely on raw power, this portrayal centers on Thor’s internal conflict. His reputation and physical presence remain intact, but the character is defined more by what he carries with him than what he can destroy. That contrast puts him in direct opposition to Kratos, whose own journey is shaped by similar themes.

Ólafsson brings a long list of dramatic credits to the role, including work on Trapped, The Tourist, True Detective, NOS4A2, and The Missing. He has also appeared in films such as Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, The Meg, and Eurovision. His recent projects include Severance, Somebody Somewhere, and Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, along with upcoming roles in 121212 and Blood on Snow.

A Growing Cast and a Clear Direction

Ólafsson joins a cast that already includes Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Max Parker as Heimdall. Together, they form the foundation of the series’ take on Norse mythology, shaped by the relationships and conflicts that define the games.

The series is being led by Ronald D. Moore, who serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. He is joined by a creative team that includes Cory Barlog, Maril Davis, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, and Asad Qizilbash. Emmy Award winner Frederick E. O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes, bringing experience from Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout.

With filming moving ahead in Vancouver, this casting helps clarify the direction the series is taking. Ólafsson feels like a deliberate choice for a character who relies more on presence and emotional weight than spectacle, which fits the kind of story God of War is known for.
