Ryan Hurst has been cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming God of War live-action series, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
Hurst is already familiar with the franchise, having voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök, a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination. His casting brings an actor with direct experience in the series’ modern era into the role of its central character.
The God of War series is based on PlayStation’s long-running mythology-inspired action franchise and has received a two-season order. Pre-production is underway in Vancouver, and casting has begun.
A Kratos Story Centered On The Modern Era
According to the announcement, the live-action adaptation will closely follow the story arc established in the most recent God of War games. The series centers on Kratos as he navigates a new phase of his life alongside his young son, Atreus, following the death of his wife, Faye.
Rather than focusing solely on Kratos’ past as a warrior and god, the show will emphasize the father-and-son relationship that became the emotional core of the last two games. Kratos’ struggle to guide Atreus, while confronting his own history, is described as the heartbeat of the series.
Creative Team And Production Details
The first two episodes of God of War will be directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, whose credits include Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout.
Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Additional executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers on the series.
The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, continuing PlayStation Productions’ push to expand its game franchises into television.
A Familiar Face For Longtime Fans
Casting Hurst as Kratos is notable given his recent role as Thor in God of War Ragnarök. While the characters occupy different places in the franchise, Hurst’s prior work means he already has direct experience with the tone and performance style that defined the modern God of War era.
No release window has been announced yet for the series.
