Dave Bautista is set to take over the role of Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action God of War series. Variety reports that the Dune and Guardians of the Galaxy actor will replace Ryan Hurst, who was announced as Kratos in January 2026.
Hurst suffered a torn bicep on set in June and required surgery. Variety previously reported that the injury would have delayed a return to production until 2027, leading Amazon and Sony to recast Kratos. Production is now expected to resume in the coming weeks.
Dave Bautista Replaces Ryan Hurst as Kratos
Bautista had been in talks for the role earlier in August. Variety now reports that he is officially set to lead the series as Kratos.
The recast means every scene featuring Hurst as Kratos will need to be filmed again. Production originally began in Vancouver in February, so Bautista is joining after work on the series had already started.
Prime Video’s God of War adaptation will follow the story of the two most recent games in the series. Kratos is raising his ten-year-old son Atreus as the pair travel to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother.
Their journey brings them into conflict with gods from the Norse pantheon. Kratos tries to teach Atreus how to become a better god, with Atreus pushing his father toward becoming a better human.
God of War Production Expected to Resume Soon
Prime Video has given God of War a two-season order, with both seasons planned to shoot back-to-back. Variety reports that production is expected to resume in the coming weeks now that Bautista is set as Kratos.
There is still no announced release window for the series. The reshoots also mean Bautista will need to replace Hurst in material that was filmed before the recast.
Ronald D. Moore remains the writer, showrunner, and an executive producer. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes.
Prime Video’s God of War Cast Continues to Take Shape
Callum Vinson remains attached to play Atreus alongside Bautista’s Kratos. Max Parker is playing Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is Thor, Mandy Patinkin is Odin, and Alastair Duncan is Mimir.
Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka are playing brothers Brok and Sindri. Ed Skrein is attached as Baldur.
The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
Bautista’s casting gives the production its new Kratos after Hurst’s injury forced a change in the lead role. With production expected to resume soon, Prime Video has not yet announced when God of War will premiere.
