Prime Video has officially cast Callum Vinson as Atreus in its upcoming God of War live-action series from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

The announcement comes as pre-production continues in Vancouver on the two-season series order. Vinson will play Atreus, the young son of Kratos, whose relationship with his father sits at the centre of the story.

Atreus at the Centre of the Story

Atreus is described as a ten-year-old boy raised in isolation in a remote forest cabin by his mother, Faye. He is an accomplished archer with a strong curiosity about what lies beyond his home and an affinity for animals.

After Faye’s death, Atreus is left with a cold, distant father he barely knows. Kratos, in turn, knows little about his son. Atreus wants his father’s approval and is desperate to prove he is strong enough to survive in a harsh and dangerous world.

The Cast Continues to Take Shape

Vinson joins a growing ensemble led by Ryan Hurst as Kratos. Previously announced cast members include Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, and Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

This marks Vinson’s third project with Sony Pictures Television. He is set to appear in Season 3 of Netflix’s The Night Agent, and previously starred in Peacock’s Long Bright River

The Creative Team Behind the Series

Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E. O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes. The series is led by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, who also serves as executive producer and writer.

God of War follows Kratos and Atreus as they set out to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Over the course of the journey, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

No release window has been announced.
