Prime Video has added another key character to its growing God of War cast. Ed Skrein has signed on to play Baldur in the upcoming live-action series from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, produced with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

The casting brings one of the biggest figures from 2018’s God of War into a series that already has a two-season order. Pre-production is underway in Vancouver. The lineup around Kratos, Atreus, and the wider Norse cast also keeps growing.

Baldur Brings a Major Threat Into the Story

Baldur is not a background addition. He is one of the central figures in God of War. His arrival gives the adaptation one of its most dangerous and personal threats.

He's described as Odin’s youngest son, but also as his father’s most dangerous weapon. Baldur is charismatic and unpredictable. He is also driven by deep anger after a curse left him unable to feel physical sensation or pleasure.

That curse shapes how he moves through the world. It also turns him into a brutal hand-to-hand fighter who wants an opponent strong enough to finally make him feel something again.

That puts Baldur in a very different place from the other cast members announced so far. He is not just another Norse figure. He's a direct threat to Kratos and one of the people who sets this story in motion.

The Cast Around Kratos and Atreus Keeps Growing

Skrein joins a cast that already includes Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Callum Vinson as Atreus, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin.

Adding Baldur now makes it clear that Prime Video is building toward the core Norse story rather than only hinting at it from the edges.

Skrein also comes in with strong franchise and action credentials. That makes him a natural fit for a character like Baldur. With this role now filled, the show has added another major piece of its central cast.

The Series Is Coming Together Behind the Scenes

Prime Video’s God of War follows Kratos and Atreus as they set out to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Along the way, Kratos tries to teach his son how to be a better god. Atreus, in turn, tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

The series is being co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

Ronald D. Moore is serving as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes.

There is still no release window. Even so, with pre-production underway and another central role now cast, the series is starting to look much more complete.
