Nintendo just dropped some news that should be on every Mario fan's radar. There's a Nintendo Direct airing Monday, March 9 at 2pm PT. It's dedicated entirely to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. No game news, no hardware announcements. Just the film. Nintendo is billing it as the final trailer before the movie opens on April 1, 2026.

You can watch it live on YouTube right here:

The word "final" is doing a lot of work in that announcement. Nintendo isn't just dropping another clip. This is the last look at the film before it hits theatres. They've been saving something. A character moment, a plot beat, a surprise. Monday is when it comes out. Mark it in your calendar now.

A New Poster Dropped and Wart Is in This Movie

Along with the Direct news, Nintendo dropped a new movie poster. Mario, Rosalina, Bowser, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Toad, and Luigi are all in it. The galaxy backdrop is packed with floating worlds and what looks like a fleet of airships. There's a lot going on but it works. It's the kind of poster you'd actually want on your wall.

The new Super Mario Galaxy Movie poster and yes, if you look closely, Wart is in there too

But here's the part that got me. Wart is in it. Yes, that Wart. The boss from Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES. The frog king who has been basically nowhere in the Mario franchise for the better part of 40 years. He's in the poster for a major animated film releasing in theatres worldwide. I genuinely didn't see that coming.

Wart showing up here is a big deal for anyone who grew up playing Super Mario Bros. 2. He's not a character Nintendo has leaned on at all since the NES days. No major game appearances, no recurring role, nothing. Even as a cameo, his inclusion tells you something about the scope of what Nintendo and Illumination are going for. They're not just pulling from the obvious roster. They're reaching back into the deeper catalogue.

It also makes you wonder who else might be in there that we haven't spotted yet.

The marketing rollout for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been steady and deliberate for months. Yoshi was first revealed back in January. Character posters dropped in February. Universal announced park experiences at both Hollywood and Orlando. Nintendo of Canada is bringing Nintendo Switch 2 demos to select Cineplex theatres. Monday's Direct is the final piece before everything goes wide on April 1.

The film is a Nintendo and Illumination production, distributed by Universal Pictures worldwide.Set a reminder. Monday, March 9, 2pm PT. Don't miss this one.
