Paramount and Activision have finally put a firm date on the calendar for the live-action Call of Duty movie. It’s arriving on June 30, 2028. This isn’t just another vague announcement that might disappear.
The project has a heavy-hitting creative team attached that points toward a very specific tone for the series. Peter Berg is directing and co-writing the script alongside Taylor Sheridan. It’s a move that suggests the studios want a gritty military focus rather than a standard summer blockbuster. The news was first shared via an official social post from the Call of Duty account this morning.
The Sheridan and Berg Connection
Having Taylor Sheridan on the script is a win for anyone hoping for a serious story. He’s the writer behind Sicario and the creator of Yellowstone. Both projects are known for blunt dialogue and harsh environments. The man doesn’t do fluff; he focuses on the kind of raw, heavy-hitting storytelling that fits perfectly with a series like this.
Peter Berg has plenty of experience in this lane too. He directed Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon. These two working together means we likely aren’t getting a lighthearted action flick.
Instead, it looks like Activision wants something that captures the harsh nature of the Modern Warfare campaigns. This creative duo knows how to handle large-scale military themes without making them feel like a cartoon. They’re the right choice for a franchise that built its reputation on hard-hitting stories and combat that doesn't hold back.
Expanding the Call of Duty Brand
Paramount is handling the distribution and production alongside Activision. Producers include David Glasser and Activision President Rob Kostich. The goal is to take a franchise that has already earned over $35 billion and find a way to reach folks who don’t spend their weekends in a headset.
We’ve seen a lot of success with video game movies lately, but Call of Duty is a different beast. The brand is so tied to the competitive multiplayer side of things. Trying to find a narrative that satisfies long-term fans but also works for a general audience is a tough task. But the studios are betting on the fact that the series has reached over 1 billion fans over its lifetime.
The Two-Year Countdown for Call of Duty
June 2028 is only two years away. That gives the team a tight window to get the script and filming finished. Usually, these types of announcements happen and then the projects disappear into development for a decade. We’ve heard rumours about a Call of Duty cinematic universe for years, but nothing ever made it to the finish line.
Having a firm date and a director like Berg attached this early makes this feel more real than any previous attempt. It’s a massive move for a series that has defined the shooter genre for over twenty years. Activision is clearly ready to see if the success of the games can finally work on the big screen.
