Bloodborne animated movie is officially in development for an R-rated hunt

Sony's R-rated Bloodborne animated project will need to capture the intense, unforgiving combat that defined the original PlayStation 4 classic.

The hunt is moving to the big screen. Sony confirmed at CinemaCon 2026 on April 14, 2026, that an R-rated animated Bloodborne movie is officially in the works. Sony Pictures Animation is handling the project, ensuring the twisted streets of Yharnam get the dark, mature treatment they deserve. It's the first big expansion for the franchise since the original game launched on PlayStation 4.

Choosing animation over live action is a big win for the project’s look. The Victorian architecture and eldritch monsters in Bloodborne rely on a specific art style that often looks rubbery or fake in live action. Solid move. By going with Sony Pictures Animation, the studio pushes the gore and body horror to limits that a physical set just couldn't handle.

This follows the high bar for visuals set by other gaming hits, like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie from Illumination. The R-rating is a firm commitment to the source material. You don't have to worry about a watered-down version of the story. Sony's presentation suggested a dark, moody take that mirrors the cruel difficulty and unforgiving world fans already love.

Jacksepticeye Joins the Hunt

One of the biggest shocks during the CinemaCon announcement was the involvement of Seán McLoughlin, better known as Jacksepticeye. The creator has been a vocal fan of the game for years, and his presence on the project adds a layer of genuine drive to the production.

Sony didn't confirm if he’s voicing a lead character or serving as a creative consultant. But his connection to the Bloodborne community is undeniable. It's clear Sony wants to keep the core audience happy by involving people who actually understand the lore. This isn't just a generic cash-in on a popular brand.

A Bloodborne movie expands the Yharnam universe

This film marks another big step in Sony's plan to turn its gaming hits into a full media ecosystem. We've already seen Prime Video's God of War and The Last of Us make the jump to television. Bloodborne feels different because of its niche, hardcore following. Expanding the IP into movies suggests that Sony still sees massive value in the brand despite the lack of a recent sequel.

This movie might be the bridge that leads to a future game project or a long-overdue hardware update for the original title. For now, seeing Yharnam realized with a massive budget is enough to keep any hunter happy.
