Well, guys, I've put in some more time with The Lightkeepers beta, and I like it so much that here I am making a second impressions video. Believe it or not, this is the first time I've ever done this, so that should tell you something!
If you haven't watched my first video, which covers the core mechanics, I'll leave a link in the description. This time around, I'm sharing my deeper experience.
Exploring The Islands Opens Up Much More
I missed some pretty cool stuff in my first video. The most important thing is that during the day while you're gathering resources, you can hop on a boat and travel between islands to grab better weapons, more resources, and other goodies.
While you travel, you're in third-person view, steering the boat from up top. You have to watch out for tentacles that can pop out of the water and wreck your boat. And if you venture too far out, something will swallow you whole and teleport you back to the lighthouse.
There's some really cool stuff to discover on these islands. For example, I found a crypt that needed runes to unlock. Once I placed them in the right spots, I got in and found a great weapon. So exploring is definitely worth it, and I'm sure there's more cool stuff like that scattered around.
A Full Team Makes Preparation More Fun
I've unlocked all the crafting recipes at this point. At one point I had a full team of four, and I was tasked with crafting and placing mines around the environment, while someone else fished for healing, and the other two explored.
That's what makes it even more fun with a full group. Everyone can pull their weight and get properly prepped for the waves.
The Boss Fight Gets Overwhelming Fast
I didn't talk about the boss last time, and it's a good one! Tentacles come at you from every corner. It looks incredible in VR, and you really get that sense of dread. I love it.
You have to shoot their eyes to deal damage, all while staying aware of your surroundings, since smaller tentacles will be shooting at you and can even fling groups of enemies right at your lighthouse. It gets overwhelming fast.
The game also has a really cool sanity mechanic. I haven't experienced everything yet, but from what I can tell, you need to use your lantern in the lighthouse to burn off some kind of contamination.
Also, when you die, you get trapped in a cocoon, and your teammates have to use their lanterns on you to break you out and revive you. Really well thought out.
Weapons And Upgrades Keep The Progression Going
There's a solid variety of weapons too, including pistols, automatics, shotguns, LMGs, and more. Everything feels good in its own way.
I'll admit I struggled at first with loading the magazine on the automatic, but I got the hang of it eventually. The devs know people are having trouble with reloading and are looking into ways to improve it.
I also noticed you can upgrade your weapons back at the hub for more damage and better stats, so it's a solid loop: clear contracts, get better gear, tackle harder missions.
Once the full game drops, I want to see how long it takes before things start feeling repetitive, or if there's a roadmap from the devs showing what's coming to keep the game fresh long-term.
There's Still More I Haven't Seen
Even after all this extra time, there's still stuff I haven't gotten to check out. Apparently there are dungeons hidden around the islands with some of the best loot in the game.
I've also heard teammates mention equipping grimoires that make you extra powerful? Not totally sure how that works. I'll need to try it myself.
I've cleared all the missions on standard difficulty, and I'm honestly not sure I'm ready for harder ones yet. I'll keep grinding for better weapons until I can clear these without dying.
I still stand by wanting more lighthouse variety, but I haven't tried the tougher missions yet, so that might change things.
The Lightkeepers Has Me Ready For September
The Lightkeepers beta I played has wrapped, and the game launches on September 10, 2026. It'll be a paid game, with the price still TBD.
I'll definitely be in there, and I hope to see you there too!
