Rockstar Games debuted Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a new gameplay presentation captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, initially through Netflix. The premiere coincided with a major increase in Netflix activity in the U.S. According to Abe Yousef, Senior Insights Analyst at market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, Netflix U.S. mobile app users during the reveal were almost 50% above the average for the same hour across the previous 12 Thursdays. U.S. web visitors were more than 125% above the web average for that same period.
Sensor Tower also estimates Grand Theft Auto VI had about 4.6 million preorders before the Netflix presentation. It values those estimated orders at roughly $446 million in deferred gross revenue. These are modelled estimates, not official Rockstar Games preorder figures.
Rockstar used Netflix as the first home for the presentation. It later released the extended look through its official YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI website. Rockstar says all footage in the presentation was captured in-game on PlayStation 5. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X|S.
Netflix Activity Climbed During the GTA VI Reveal
Sensor Tower measured the hour beginning at 3 p.m., when the presentation debuted on Netflix. During that window, U.S. mobile app users rose 35% from the previous hour. They were also about 50% higher than during the same hour one day earlier. Compared with the same period one week earlier, the increase was 41%.
Across the same hour on the previous 12 Thursdays, Netflix U.S. mobile app users were almost 50% higher during the reveal. Sensor Tower also estimates U.S. web visitors were more than 125% above the 12-Thursday average during the 3–4 p.m. window.
For a game presentation, Netflix is an unusual place to see a usage jump of this size. The timing lines up with the GTA VI premiere. The figures don't prove every additional visit came specifically for the game. Sensor Tower says the numbers are directional estimates based on proprietary panels and data-science models, not internal Netflix metrics.
Sensor Tower Estimates 4.6 Million GTA VI Preorders
Sensor Tower estimates GTA VI had about 4.6 million preorders ahead of the extended look. The firm values those estimated orders at about $446 million in deferred gross revenue.
Sensor Tower describes the total as significant this early in the preorder period. The firm says most game preorders typically arrive during the final week before launch. Its estimate therefore reflects a large volume of orders months before Grand Theft Auto VI's November release.
Estimated Preorders Favour PlayStation and Ultimate Edition
Sensor Tower's estimate assigns 77% of GTA VI preorders to PlayStation and 23% to XBOX. The firm also estimates nearly 90% of those early orders are for the $100 Ultimate Edition rather than the $80 Standard Edition.
Sensor Tower expects premium editions to account for a larger share early in a preorder period. Even with that pattern, Sensor Tower describes a premium share near 90% as highly unusual for this stage of a game's preorder cycle.
Rockstar Games has not published official GTA VI preorder totals or a platform split. Sensor Tower's figures remain estimates. In its data, Netflix activity rose during the reveal hour. Early preorders were also concentrated on PlayStation and the Ultimate Edition months before launch.
