The Sims 4 is getting a massive injection of quality of life improvements and free content on May 12, 2026. EA and Maxis just shared a Laundry List that includes over 150 fixes and new features to make the existing content better for everyone. It’s a move that proves the team is focusing on the gameplay that actually matters to the community right now.

If you’ve been sticking with the game for years, you know it has grown into a massive beast, but that growth often brings bugs. This upcoming Base Game update is meant for tidying up those stiff parts and adding more variety to how you create and play with your Sims. You won't have to wait long to see these changes, as the patch is right around the corner.

Base Layer options expand CAS variety

One of the biggest additions is a brand new Base Layer feature in Create A Sim. This isn't just a few new shirts; you're getting over 380 new variants across all swatches. This allows you to layer clothing in ways that weren't possible before. It gives you way more control over how your Sims look without needing a mountain of custom content to get the job done.

I’ve spent too much time trying to find an undershirt that doesn't clip through a jacket. This feature should make that routine much easier. By giving you 380+ new options, the team is finally addressing outfit combinations that used to feel limited. I recommend jumping into CAS immediately after the update to see how these layers work with your existing outfits; it saves a lot of time when you're trying to build a specific look. Much like the ambitious changes we saw in The Sims 4: Royalty & Legacy, this update prioritizes sim identity.

With over 380 new Base Layer variants coming to Create A Sim, you’ll have significantly more freedom to mix and match outfits for every life stage.

Infant Playmats and crucial movement fixes

If you’re struggling with the tiny humans in your household, this update is for you. There's a new Playmat for Infants coming with nine different swatches. More importantly, the team is tackling over 25 bug fixes for issues involving Infants and Toddlers that the community has been vocal about. It’s about time those top-voted issues got some serious focus from the developers.

We've all seen those moments where an Infant or Toddler does something completely unhinged because of a pathfinding error. These 25+ fixes target those types of headaches directly. Adding a free Playmat is a nice touch, but making sure the life stages actually work as intended is the real win here. It makes running a family-focused save much more reliable for the long haul, especially if you are still exploring the systems in The Sims 4 Growing Together.

Technical updates protect your save progress

On the technical side, the frequency of automatically generated backup saves is going up. This is a massive win for anyone who has ever lost hours of progress to a sudden crash or a power flicker. Having the game look out for your progress more often means you can focus on your legacy. You won't have to worry about hitting the save button every five minutes.

They’re also squashing those annoying "black photo" bugs with six specific fixes for texture loss. I’ve tried to decorate a home with memories only to find the photos had turned into dark voids. They've even done extra testing on paintings and photos to make sure previously unreported cases don't slip through. This fix means your Sim's hard work at the easel or with a camera will actually stay visible on the wall.

The Sims 4 May 12 update makes Base Game living much easier

The Sims 4 has turned into a monster of a game. It's good to see the team circling back to clean up the foundations. These updates hit the Base Game on May 12, and you can track the full list of changes over at the official newsroom. It's a solid step toward making the core experience feel as responsive as the expansions that have come out since launch.

Don't forget to check your save folders after the patch. With the increased backup frequency, you might want to clear out older, redundant files to keep your storage lean. This update focuses on the long-term health of your saves and the visual consistency of your world. It’s exactly the kind of support a game this old needs to stay worth your time.
