We just got done celebrating the fact that the Nintendo Switch 2 reached nearly 20 million units sold in its first year, but now there is some news that's a bit harder to cheer for. Nintendo just announced a global price revision that hits North America on September 1, 2026. If you’re in the United States, the MSRP for the Nintendo Switch 2 is jumping from $449.99 USD up to $499.99 USD. For those of us here in Canada, the price is moving from $629.99 CAD up to $679.99 CAD.

You have a small window of time to lock in the current price before the change takes effect at the start of September. Nintendo points to rising component costs and shifts in the currency market as the main reasons for the adjustment. The Nintendo Switch 2 only launched in June 2025, so it’s still very early in its life cycle to see a price jump. If you’ve been waiting for a holiday sale, you might be better off buying right now to avoid the extra $50 sticker shock.

Global Economic Factors Drive the Shift in Pricing

Nintendo hasn't raised prices like this in a long time, so seeing these numbers climb is a bit of a shock. However, they aren't the only ones doing it. Both PlayStation and Xbox have raised prices recently. Nintendo is finally following suit to deal with the same economic pressures. The parts needed to build a Nintendo Switch 2 aren't getting any cheaper. Nintendo is choosing to pass some of that cost on to you to keep their margins healthy.

The primary cause is the fluctuating currency market, especially the ongoing depreciation of the yen. Most companies try to lower prices as a console gets older. The 2026 economy is working against that traditional model. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but it’s the way Nintendo can keep producing enough consoles to meet the massive global demand we saw in today's earlier sales report.

Japan Faces Immediate Price Hikes Across All Console Versions

North America has a few months to prepare, but Japan is getting hit much sooner. Starting May 25, 2026, the price for a Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan jumps from 49,980 yen to 59,980 yen. It isn't just the new console getting a price bump either. The original Nintendo Switch models are also seeing a significant increase in their home territory.

The standard Nintendo Switch is moving up to 43,980 yen. The Nintendo Switch OLED Model will now cost 47,980 yen in Japan. For gamers in Europe, the Nintendo Switch 2 will also see an increase to €499.99 on September 1, 2026. It’s a broad sweep that covers almost every major region where the console is sold. Japan is bearing the brunt of the change because of how much their domestic currency has struggled recently.

Nintendo Switch Online Service Fees Are Also Climbing

The bad news isn't limited to the consoles themselves. Nintendo is also increasing the cost of Nintendo Switch Online. This change hits Japan first on May 25, 2026. Monthly rates are rising to 400 yen and yearly rates are hitting 3,000 yen. Nintendo says these extra funds are needed for operational maintenance of the servers that keep your games running online.

We haven't seen the exact North American dollar amounts for the service hike yet. It’s safe to assume a similar increase is coming our way soon. If you’re a fan of playing games like Mario Kart World or Pokémon Pokopia online, you’ll want to check your renewal dates. Locking in a multi-year subscription now might save you some cash before the new rates go live globally.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Price Hike Closes the Launch Window Discount

The $679.99 CAD price point puts the Nintendo Switch 2 in direct competition with the other high-end consoles on the Canadian market. Nintendo has enjoyed a very strong start with nearly 20 million units sold. They clearly feel the demand is high enough to sustain this increase even so early after launch.

The biggest takeaway here is the September 1, 2026 deadline for Canada and the US. You have roughly four months to pick up the console at the original launch price. Once that date passes, that launch window "discount" is gone for good. If you’re planning on playing the big games coming out this winter, buying your console this summer is the smartest move for your wallet.
