Sophie Turner Leads the Series as Lara Croft
Sophie Turner stars as Lara Croft, the iconic archaeologist and adventurer. Turner has spoken openly about her connection to the character, describing Lara as a powerful and emboldened figure in a traditionally male-dominated genre.
Showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge said the series aims to balance iconic characters from the games with new faces, calling the cast “beyond my wildest dreams.” Amazon MGM Studios head Peter Friedlander added that the expanded cast brings additional depth and gravitas to the adaptation.
Who’s Behind the Tomb Raider Series
Alongside Waller-Bridge and Hodge, the series is directed and executive produced by Jonathan Van Tulleken. The show is executive produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Crystal Dynamics, Legendary Television, and Story Kitchen, with production support from Wells Street Films.
While the cast is now largely in place, Prime Video has not yet shared a release window for the series.
Thoughts on the Tomb Raider Casting
What I like about this announcement is that the casting feels deliberate. Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs aren’t here just to grab attention. They make sense for the kind of story Tomb Raider usually tells, and that goes a long way for an adaptation like this.
It also doesn’t feel like the series is trying to overhaul Lara Croft just to make a statement. With Sophie Turner in the lead and Phoebe Waller-Bridge involved creatively, it feels like there’s a clear understanding of why the character has worked for so long. There’s still a lot we don’t know, but this cast makes it easier to stay patient and see where it goes.
