Production is officially underway on Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series, and Amazon MGM Studios has shared a first look at Sophie Turner in the role of Lara Croft. The image confirms that filming has begun and offers the first glimpse at Turner’s take on the iconic adventurer.
The new series is based on the long-running Tomb Raider video game franchise and is being developed for Prime Video by Amazon MGM Studios, with production currently taking place in Vancouver.
A Familiar Icon With a New Lead
Turner becomes the latest actor to step into the role of Lara Croft, following previous film portrayals by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. While the series is still early in production, the first-look image clearly embraces Lara’s recognizable visual identity, pointing toward a version drawn closely from the games rather than a full reinvention of the character.
The series is positioned as a new chapter for Tomb Raider on screen, adapting the video game universe rather than continuing from the earlier films. Amazon first greenlit the project in 2024, with Turner’s casting reported later that year.
A Large Ensemble Cast and Creative Team
Alongside Turner, the series features a sizable supporting cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.
Amazon previously confirmed the full ensemble earlier this month, outlining the scale of the project and the range of characters involved across the series. You can find a full breakdown of the cast in our earlier coverage of the series’ casting announcement.
The series is led by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who serves as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner, alongside Chad Hodge as co-showrunner and executive producer. Jonathan van Tulleken is directing the first two episodes and also serves as an executive producer.
Tomb Raider is executive produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Crystal Dynamics, alongside Story Kitchen and Legendary Television, continuing the partnership aimed at expanding the franchise across film and television.
Tomb Raider’s Broader Moment
The timing of the series lines up with a larger return for Tomb Raider across games and media. Remasters of classic entries have brought the older games back into the spotlight, while two new titles, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, are currently slated for 2026 and 2027.
For longtime fans, seeing production officially begin and a first-look image released suggests this adaptation is moving with real momentum. It’s another sign that Lara Croft is being positioned for a broader comeback, not just on screen, but across the franchise as a whole.
More details about the Prime Video series, including story focus and a release window, are expected as production continues.
