A new BioWare documentary is coming in 2027, with the studio's founders, longtime developers and other familiar names from gaming taking part. Massive Effect: The BioWare Story will explore the Edmonton studio's history and the people behind its games.
Deadline broke the news earlier today, November 5, reporting that filming began roughly two years before Electronic Arts announced its closure on October 21, 2026. Production continued through the shutdown, giving the filmmakers footage of BioWare's final days rather than just memories of its past.
Filming Began Before BioWare's Closure
The documentary is written and directed by Akash Sherman, whose previous work includes Clara. Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie are producing it with Fennessey Films and Score G Productions for Edmonton-based broadcaster Super Channel.
BioWare was founded in Edmonton in 1995 and became known for role-playing games including Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
The producers are planning a world premiere in 2027, with screenings at major film festivals also planned. A specific date hasn't been announced.
BioWare Founders and Developers Share Their Stories
All three BioWare founders, Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip, are among the announced participants. Casey Hudson, who directed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, is also involved. Other former BioWare developers announced for the film include Aaryn Flynn, David Gaider, Trent Oster, Mark Darrah, Caroline Livingstone, Drew Karpyshyn, James Ohlen and Mac Walters.
Jennifer Hale, the voice of the female Commander Shepard in Mass Effect, is also taking part. Other announced names include Lucasfilm Games vice-president Douglas Reilly, The Electric Playground creator Victor Lucas, former EA CEO John Riccitiello and The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley.
Muzyka and Zeschuk have endorsed the film. On its official website, the co-founders say they're proud that it honours the people who helped make BioWare's games possible.
Fans Can Contribute to Massive Effect
The filmmakers are inviting BioWare fans to contribute their own memories and material to the documentary. They're accepting fan art, cosplay, photographs, convention videos, personal memorabilia and footage connected to people's experiences with BioWare and its games.
Fans can submit more than one item, including older photos or footage recorded on early digital cameras. Contributors must own the material or have permission to share it. Sending something doesn't guarantee it will appear in the finished film, but the production team will contact people if it wants to explore using their material.
The submission form is available on the documentary's official website.
