SEGA and Netflix have announced a new multi-title partnership to adapt several SEGA games for film and television. The first project is a live-action Crazy Taxi comedy movie. A new animated Sonic the Hedgehog series and a live-action STRANGER THAN HEAVEN film are also in development.

Crazy Taxi is the first project from the partnership. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writing duo behind the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun, are writing the movie. SEGA is also preparing Crazy Taxi: World Tour for release in 2027.

Crazy Taxi Gets a Live-Action Comedy Movie

Crazy Taxi first hit arcades in 1999. The basic setup puts you behind the wheel of a cab racing against the clock. You earn fares by getting passengers to their destinations quickly, while ramps, traffic, and tips keep the pace moving. Its punk-rock attitude became another signature part of the series.

Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher, producers behind the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, are producing alongside Toru Nakahara. Nakahara is SEGA's head producer for film and television projects.

The movie announcement comes as SEGA is bringing the series back to games with Crazy Taxi: World Tour. The 2027 game adds online multiplayer and a new World Tour story mode. Classic mode returns to the familiar time-based setup of the original Crazy Taxi. SEGA has also confirmed cross-play and returning drivers Axel, Gena, B.D. Joe, and Gus.

Sonic and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN Are Also in Development

A new animated Sonic the Hedgehog series is also in development with Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara. It is aimed at an upper preschool audience and will present Sonic and his friends as heroes in a comedic series for younger viewers.

This is a new project separate from Sonic Prime, which already has three seasons available on Netflix. No release date has been announced for the new series.

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is also getting a live-action film, with Nakahara producing. The upcoming RGG Studio game takes place in early 20th-century Japan. It follows a foreigner who rises from poverty into the yakuza and eventually the entertainment business. Further details about the film remain under wraps.

No release dates have been announced for any of the three adaptations. Crazy Taxi: World Tour remains scheduled for 2027 while the Crazy Taxi, Sonic the Hedgehog, and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN screen projects continue development.
