PlayStation has launched Live TV on PS5 in the U.S., bringing free, ad-supported television directly to the console's Media section. The new service includes more than 100 live channels along with a growing selection of on-demand movies, TV shows, anime, sports, news, and other programming.
For those of us in Canada, there's another part of the announcement worth watching. PlayStation says it is looking to expand Live TV on PS5 to Canada, although there is no Canadian launch date yet.
The service comes from Sony Pictures Television and is available to U.S. PS5 owners starting August 31. PlayStation also plans to refresh the programming regularly and add more channels and content over time.
Live TV On PS5 Brings More Than 100 Channels To The Console
Live TV on PS5 launches with a broad mix of entertainment rather than focusing on one type of programming.
Movie channels include MovieSphere by Lionsgate, Sony One Horror Hits, Cinevault, and FilmRise Free Movies. TV programming includes shows such as The Walking Dead, Community, The Shield, Hell's Kitchen, Unsolved Mysteries, and Fear Factor.
Anime is also a noticeable part of the lineup. Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter, and Death Note are among the available series, alongside Crunchyroll channels including Black Clover and Box Sets.
Sports programming comes from FOX Sports, NASCAR, NBC Sports Now, UFC, and others. PlayStation also lists news, weather, gaming, esports, podcasts, documentaries, and creator-focused programming among the available content.
Live TV Is Built Into The PS5 Media Section
Accessing Live TV on PS5 starts from the console's Media tab. From there, you select the Live TV on PS5 icon and connect your PlayStation account.
No paid subscription or separate download is required. Live TV on PS5 does require a Sony Pictures CORE account, which you can create or connect when accessing the service.
Programming can vary by local television market, and PlayStation says the lineup may change over time. For anyone already using PS5 for streaming video, Live TV adds another entertainment option directly through the console.
PlayStation Is Looking To Bring Live TV On PS5 To Canada
Live TV on PS5 is only available in the U.S. for now, but Canada is already part of PlayStation's expansion thinking.
PlayStation specifically says it is looking to expand the experience to Canada while continuing to explore other regions. That's as far as the company has gone, so there is no confirmed Canadian date, channel lineup, or indication that every U.S. programming partner would carry over.
Still, seeing Canada called out directly is encouraging. If Live TV on PS5 does expand here, we'll be watching for details on timing, programming, and how much of the U.S. service makes the move north.
