The world of Metro 2039 is just as unforgiving as fans remember, and we're finally about to see it in action.

Xbox and 4A Games just confirmed that the next chapter in the Metro series is real, and we’re getting our first look at it in just a few days. The upcoming broadcast, titled Xbox First Look: Metro 2039, goes live on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 1 p.m. ET.

You’ll be able to watch the world premiere on the official Xbox YouTube channel, where developer 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver will finally pull back the curtain on this highly anticipated sequel.

Metro 2039 Continues a Harsh Franchise Legacy

This marks the fourth mainline entry in the franchise, following the journey that started with Metro 2033 and most recently continued in 2019's Metro Exodus. 4A Games has been quiet about the project for years, but the title Metro 2039 suggests the story picks up roughly three to four years after the protagonist Artyom’s last outing.

The series has always found a home on Xbox consoles, from the original Xbox 360 cult classic status of the first two games to the technical benchmark of Exodus on the One X. Seeing Microsoft host the reveal feels like a natural fit for the brand.

High Expectations for the Xbox First Look Broadcast

The broadcast is a digital-only event focusing specifically on this new game. Beyond the premiere trailer, fans want to see how the Ukrainian developer has pushed the look of the game on Xbox Series X. Metro has always been a standard for lighting and mood, so seeing what 4A Games can do with a project built from the ground up for current hardware is a massive draw.

We’re also waiting to hear if the long-rumoured multiplayer experience, which the team confirmed was in development years ago, will finally make its debut here.

Metro 2039 Represents a Major Step for 4A Games

I’ve been a fan of the gloomy, harsh world 4A Games built since the 360 days. Metro Exodus was a massive step forward for the series, especially with its move toward larger, sandbox-style environments that didn't sacrifice the claustrophobic hostility the series is known for.

Seeing where they go next with Metro 2039 is genuinely exciting, especially considering how much the industry has shifted toward more open-ended exploration since the last game. The wait for a new mainline entry has been long, but the reveal is finally around the corner. If you want to see the reveal live, make sure to set a reminder for the YouTube Premiere this Thursday.
