| A24 and Alex Garland are bringing the world of Elden Ring to the big screen in 2028. |
By Jon Scarr
Alex Garland is officially heading to the Lands Between. Bandai Namco and A24 have announced that the live-action Elden Ring movie will arrive in theaters on March 3, 2028. The project is being filmed specifically for IMAX, which makes sense given the massive scale of the source material. It's a long wait, but the pedigree behind this adaptation is exactly what a game this big deserves.
Alex Garland is writing and directing, bringing the same mind that gave us Ex Machina and Civil War to Hidetaka Miyazaki’s world. This isn't just another game adaptation. It's a major cinematic event that aims to capture the specific, dark grit fans have loved since 2022.
Alex Garland and A24 Aim for a 2028 Elden Ring Movie Release Date
The partnership between Bandai Namco and A24 is one of the most interesting parts of this news. Most big gaming movies go for a standard blockbuster feel. Choosing A24 suggests we're getting something with much more mood and perhaps a bit of a weird edge.
Alex Garland has a history of making movies that sit with you long after the credits roll. His style fits the cryptic storytelling and heavy tone of the game perfectly. You don't want a bright, generic action movie for a story originally built with help from George R. R. Martin. You want something that feels old, heavy, and slightly dangerous.
A24 has a reputation for letting directors take risks. That is exactly what a live-action version of this world needs to succeed.
Full Cast for the Lands Between
The full cast list is out and it's a massive group of talent. Kit Connor and Cailee Spaeny lead a huge lineup. Nick Offerman is also on board, which is a big win after his incredible work in The Last of Us.
Seeing names like Jonathan Pryce and Ben Whishaw suggests the script is leaning into the regal, tragic side of the lore.
Here is the full cast list for the production:
- Kit Connor (Heartstopper)
- Ben Whishaw (Paddington)
- Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus)
- Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga)
- Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms)
- Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina)
- Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes)
- Ruby Cruz (Willow)
- Nick Offerman (The Last of Us)
- John Hodgkinson
- Jefferson Hall
- Emma Laird
- Peter Serafinowicz
Elden Ring Production and IMAX Details are a Massive Win for Fans
Production is scheduled to begin in Spring 2026. Because the movie is being filmed for IMAX, the visual scale should be enormous. Everyone who has explored the game knows the feeling of stepping out into Limgrave for the first time. Capturing that feeling on a massive screen is clearly a priority for Garland.
The game has already sold over 30 million copies worldwide. The audience is definitely there. By the time 2028 rolls around, the anticipation will be at a boiling point. It's a bold move to announce this so far in advance. It shows a lot of confidence in the script and the vision. I’m genuinely curious to see how they handle the creatures and the magic without losing that harsh, gritty feel from FromSoftware.
