JAKKS Pacific and SEGA have signed a new multi-year agreement for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, setting up a full wave of movie merchandise ahead of the film’s March 19, 2027 theatrical release.
Through the deal, JAKKS and its costume division Disguise will handle action figures, plush, playsets, role play items, costumes, and costume accessories, with the first products set to reach stores in early 2027.
The timing is the first thing that jumps out. This isn't a small movie merch drop showing up right before opening week. It puts Sonic the Hedgehog 4 on store shelves months ahead of release, which says a lot about how much retail room this movie already has.
The Toy Push Starts Before the Movie Does
Even without product photos yet, the category list tells you plenty. Action figures and plush are expected. Playsets suggest the lineup could go further into movie locations, multi-character packs, or larger shelf pieces. Role play items, costumes, and costume accessories also show that this isn't staying in one corner of the toy aisle.
That wider spread is what gives this announcement more value than a basic licensing update. JAKKS isn't treating Sonic the Hedgehog 4 like a one-wave movie toy program. It reads more like a broader retail plan that can reach kids, collectors, and costume buyers at the same time.
JAKKS Is Already Deep Into Sonic Merchandise
This isn't a brand-new pairing built only for the next film either. SEGA says JAKKS has been working on Sonic products since 2019, so this deal extends a relationship that was already in place. That fits with JAKKS and SEGA’s earlier Sonic merchandise agreement, which already showed how much ground the brand covers outside the movie side.
That history helps explain why the company is comfortable getting product ready this far ahead of release. JAKKS already knows the character lineup, the product categories, and the kind of Sonic items that move at retail. This is less about starting over and more about carrying that relationship into the next movie.
The Retail Picture Around Sonic Keeps Getting Bigger
This announcement also comes at a time when the bigger Sonic machine keeps building. Between Amy Rose joining Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and SEGA’s Sonic 35th anniversary plans, there's already a lot pointing to a much wider brand push over the next year.
That makes this toy deal more interesting than a simple licensing update. It's one of the clearest signs so far that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is already moving into stores well before the movie’s marketing push hits full speed.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Merch Is Set for an Early 2027 Rollout
Right now, the missing pieces are the ones you would expect this early. JAKKS hasn't shown which characters will lead the first wave, whether the movie introduces new looks, or how much of the range is aimed at collectors versus younger fans. Those details will come later.
What's clear now is the shape of the rollout. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is getting a full merchandise program, JAKKS is handling a large part of it again, and the first products are planned for early 2027. That means the movie will likely start showing up in toy aisles well before fans see the full push on the film side.
