The Pokémon Company has just announced Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are coming to Nintendo Switch on February 27, 2026, as part of the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Both games will be available as download-exclusive releases and playable on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
The two titles will become available immediately after the Pokémon Presents video presentation airing on Pokémon Day at 6:00 a.m. PT / 9:00 a.m. ET.
Returning to Kanto on Nintendo Switch
Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version originally released in 2004 on Game Boy Advance as full remakes of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green. Those earlier games introduced the Kanto region, the original eight Gym Leaders, and the first generation of Pokémon.
FireRed and LeafGreen rebuilt those adventures with updated visuals, expanded areas like the Sevii Islands, and improved battle flow and progression compared to the original Game Boy releases. They also connected older Pokémon adventures with newer games of that era through trading and compatibility support.
Bringing these versions to Nintendo Switch allows you to revisit the original Pokémon journey without older hardware. It also introduces these remakes to players who never experienced them on Game Boy Advance.

Launch Tied Directly to Pokémon Presents Broadcast
The release timing connects directly to this year’s Pokémon Day presentation. Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version will launch digitally immediately after the Pokémon Presents stream concludes.
Pokémon Day marks the anniversary of the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green releases in Japan in 1996. The 2026 event celebrates 30 years of the franchise, which has grown across games, animation, trading cards, and merchandise.
The Pokémon Presents broadcast is expected to include additional announcements and updates across the franchise.
A Milestone Release During Pokémon’s 30th Anniversary
The arrival of FireRed and LeafGreen on Nintendo Switch continues the effort to bring classic Pokémon titles to modern hardware. These releases allow longtime fans to revisit Kanto while also giving newer players access to one of the series’ defining adventures.
With Pokémon Presents scheduled just before the games become available, February 27 is shaping up to be a major moment for Pokémon’s 30th anniversary.
