According to a recent report from Deadline, HBO is developing a Baldur’s Gate television series set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, with Craig Mazin attached to create, write, and showrun the project. The series is based on Baldur’s Gate 3, one of the most successful and widely praised role-playing games of the past decade.

Unlike HBO’s The Last of Us, which closely followed the story of its source material, this adaptation will continue the Baldur’s Gate story beyond the events of the game. The new series is designed to pick up immediately after Baldur’s Gate 3, exploring the consequences of its ending while introducing new characters alongside familiar faces.

A Direct Continuation of Baldur’s Gate 3

The Baldur’s Gate series will tell a new story that begins where Baldur’s Gate 3 ends. Characters from the game may appear, but the focus will shift toward new protagonists dealing with the aftermath of the game’s major events.

Those returning characters are expected to be far more powerful than the newcomers, creating a dynamic where they may help, interfere with, or complicate the journeys of the new heroes. That approach mirrors long-running tabletop Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, where legends and newcomers often collide.

Mazin has said the show will draw heavily from Baldur’s Gate 3 rather than the first two games, while still respecting the broader Dungeons & Dragons lore tied to The Forgotten Realms setting.

Craig Mazin’s Connection to Baldur’s Gate

Mazin’s involvement is rooted in his personal connection to the material. He has publicly shared that he completed Baldur’s Gate 3 on its demanding Honour Mode and has been a Dungeon Master for more than a decade, running weekly D&D games for years.

According to Mazin, adapting Baldur’s Gate is about continuing a story he already deeply understands rather than reshaping it for television. With no direct sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 currently in development, the series gives him creative freedom to explore the world without being boxed in by an existing game roadmap.

Familiar Voices May Return

Mazin has also expressed interest in involving cast members from Baldur’s Gate 3 in the TV series, similar to how actors from The Last of Us appeared in HBO’s adaptation. While no casting decisions have been announced, the door is open for characters to return in ways that fit the new story.

The series will feature both original characters and figures tied to Baldur’s Gate 3, blending fresh storytelling with established lore.

Where Baldur’s Gate Fits Within HBO and Hasbro’s Plans

The Baldur’s Gate series is being developed by HBO in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment, with Wizards of the Coast involved as consultants. Chris Perkins, Head of Story at Wizards of the Coast, will help guide the adaptation.

The show is designed to exist alongside Hasbro’s other Dungeons & Dragons projects, including a separate Forgotten Realms series currently in development at Netflix. The shared setting allows multiple stories to unfold without overlapping directly.

No release window has been announced yet, but development is officially underway. With Baldur’s Gate 3’s massive success and Mazin’s track record with game adaptations, this is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched video game TV projects currently in development.
