By Jon Scarr
A new free update is now available for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, adding playable Dixie Kong, performance improvements, and Nintendo Switch 2–specific upgrades.
The update is live now and brings new gameplay options across both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, along with specific Nintendo Switch 2 enhancements.
Dixie Kong Joins the Adventure
The biggest addition in this update is the arrival of Dixie Kong as a playable character. Her inclusion changes how you approach stages, thanks to her signature ponytail spin, which lets you glide, reach higher areas, and recover more easily from missed jumps.
You can switch between Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong when grabbing a barrel, giving you more flexibility in how you tackle each level. In local two-player mode, the second player can also swap between the two characters directly from the world map.
Turbo Attack Mode Adds a Speed Challenge
The update also introduces Turbo Attack, a new high-speed challenge mode that becomes available after clearing a stage. In this mode, you race through levels against the clock, aiming to finish within a set time limit.
If you clear a course fast enough, you’ll earn a Turbo Medal, giving you an extra reason to revisit stages you may have already completed.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Nintendo Switch 2 Enhancements
If you’re playing on Nintendo Switch 2, you’ll notice improved resolution, sharper visuals, and faster load times. Altogether, the update helps the game run more smoothly and better take advantage of the newer hardware.
The update also adds GameShare (Local User) support, letting you play locally with someone who doesn’t own a copy of the game, making co-op easier to jump into.
Full Update Highlights
- Playable Dixie Kong with unique movement abilities
- Turbo Attack time trial mode
- Improved visuals and faster load times on Nintendo Switch 2
- GameShare local co-op support on Switch 2
- Brazilian Portuguese language support
- Additional image quality and performance improvements
With Dixie Kong now playable and performance upgrades in place, the update gives you a solid reason to jump back into Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, especially if you’re playing on Nintendo Switch 2.
