For years, the Sleeping Dogs movie has felt stuck in limbo. It’s been announced, talked about, and then gone quiet more than once. This time, there’s finally something solid to point to.

The long-in-development film adaptation has officially found its director. The update came directly from Simu Liu, who confirmed on social media that Timo Tjahjanto is attached to direct. Liu is still set to star and is also producing the film.

It’s the clearest indication so far that the project is active again rather than sitting in the background.

The Director Attached to the Project

Tjahjanto isn’t a widely known name, but his work has made the rounds among action fans. He’s directed films built around close-range fights and physical action, including The Night Comes for Us.

More recently, he directed Nobody 2, continuing that same hands-on style. That background lines up with Sleeping Dogs, which put a lot of emphasis on martial arts combat and personal stakes rather than scale.

With Tjahjanto attached, the film appears to be aiming closer to the game’s original tone instead of reshaping it into something else.

Simu Liu’s Ongoing Involvement

Liu has been tied to the Sleeping Dogs movie for several years and has consistently pushed for the project to move forward. Alongside playing Wei Shen, he’s also producing the film, giving him a more active role than previous versions ever had.

That's important, especially after an earlier attempt led by Donnie Yen failed to make it out of development. Once that version ended, the adaptation largely disappeared from view.

This new iteration has progressed further, with a completed script draft and a director now in place.

The Game Behind the Movie

Released in 2012, Sleeping Dogs followed undercover cop Wei Shen as he worked his way into Hong Kong’s Sun On Yee Triad. The game is known for its combat system and its focus on character, loyalty, and consequence.

It felt closer to a Hong Kong crime movie than a typical open-world game. Even without a sequel, it’s remained part of the conversation, especially among gamers who felt it ended too soon.

That’s why people have always been a bit careful about getting too excited.

Where Things Stand Now

There’s still no word on a studio, production timeline, or release window. The film remains early in development, and it may take time before anything concrete is announced.

What’s changed is structure. With a director confirmed and Liu still attached on both sides of the camera, the project finally has a clearer path forward.

After years of uncertainty, Sleeping Dogs is no longer just a name that resurfaces every few years. It’s a film that now appears to be taking shape.
