Netflix’s live-action Assassin’s Creed series has locked in its director, and it’s a name that will be familiar to a lot of TV viewers.
According to Variety, Johan Renck will helm the upcoming adaptation. Renck is best known for directing HBO’s Chernobyl, a project that earned him an Emmy and widespread praise for its tone and restraint.
The Netflix series already has its leads in place. Toby Wallace and Lola Petticrew have been cast in starring roles, with Zachary Hart and Laura Marcus joining as regulars. The show is being developed as part of Netflix’s ongoing partnership with Ubisoft, first announced back in 2020.
Assassin’s Creed Netflix Series Story and Creative Team
Story details are still being kept quiet, but Netflix’s official description frames the series around the long-running conflict fans already know. The plot centres on a hidden war between two secret factions, one seeking to shape humanity through control, and the other fighting to protect free will. The story will move across key historical moments as these forces clash behind the scenes.
The series is being created and showrun by Roberto Patino and David Wiener, who are also serving as executive producers. Ubisoft Film & Television is heavily involved as well, with Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Genevieve Jones attached as executive producers, alongside Matt O’Toole.
Netflix has not announced a release window yet, but with a director now attached, the Assassin’s Creed series appears to be moving steadily forward.
