XBOX Disc-to-Digital Is Now Live for Insiders, Here’s How It Works

XBOX Disc-to-Digital is now live for select XBOX Insiders. The feature lets supported XBOX One and XBOX Series X game discs grant a digital licence tied to the physical copy. XBOX first announced it on August 26, with Insider testing beginning August 31, 2026.

The process itself is pretty straightforward. Insert a supported disc while signed in and launch the game. Once XBOX grants the digital licence, you can eject the disc and keep using the supported digital version without leaving the physical copy in the console.

That doesn’t make the disc irrelevant. Microsoft says you may still need to prove that you possess the qualifying physical copy. If you sell it, lose it, or give it away, access to the digital licence may be limited or revoked.

XBOX Physical Games Can Now Gain Digital Licences

XBOX says most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support the feature, with thousands of games included as testing begins. Not every physical game will qualify, and Microsoft says eligibility can change over time.

Claiming a supported game can happen automatically. Launch it from the disc while signed in, and XBOX shows a confirmation after the digital licence is granted. A Disc-to-Digital licensing badge also identifies the game in your XBOX library.

If you’ve got a larger physical collection, there’s also a quicker way to work through it. Turn off automatic disc playback, insert a game, select Get digital licence, and choose Claim. Once the confirmation appears, eject the disc and move on to the next one.

The physical copy continues to work after the licence is claimed. You can also remove it from the console and continue playing the supported digital version.

Selling or Losing the Disc Can Affect Digital Access

Being able to eject the disc doesn’t mean the physical copy stops mattering. Microsoft says the digital licence remains associated with the qualifying disc, and you may still need to prove that you possess it.

If you sell, lose, or give away the disc, Microsoft may limit or revoke access to the associated digital licence. XBOX also provides a settings area where you can see Disc-to-Digital games you no longer have access to.

If you still have the physical copy, reinsert it and go through the claiming process again to regain the licence. If you no longer possess the disc, Microsoft says buying the game digitally from the Microsoft Store is the other option.

One detail remains unclear. Microsoft hasn’t explained how XBOX distinguishes one physical disc from another.

Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming Depend on Game Support

A supported physical game can also open up more ways to play once its digital licence is claimed, but those options still depend on the individual game.

If a game supports XBOX Play Anywhere, its digital licence can make it available through the XBOX app on PC and supported handhelds. XBOX also says physical games can gain XBOX Cloud Gaming access where the individual game supports it.

There are a few important limits. Original XBOX and XBOX 360 discs aren’t supported. For games that come on multiple discs, disc one must be used to claim the digital licence.

Edition content also depends on how it was delivered. Content installed directly from the qualifying disc may be included with the digital licence. DLC, promotional items, and other extras supplied through separate redemption codes may not be included.

Technical limitations, manufacturing differences, and licensing or publishing restrictions can all affect eligibility. A damaged disc, a game whose digital licence has been delisted, or a non-participating game can also prevent a licence from being granted.

For now, Disc-to-Digital remains limited to select XBOX Insiders. If you’re included and have a physical XBOX collection, you can start going through your discs now to see which ones qualify.
