Nintendo just released a new overview trailer for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, and it gives us a much better look at what we'll be doing when the game arrives May 21 on Nintendo Switch 2.

Back in March, we learned about the storybook world and the May launch date. But this new footage finally shows off some of the new moves and the research cycle that makes this one different from previous Yoshi games.

The Tail Flick is a brand-new move

The Tail Flick is the most interesting addition shown in the trailer. It's a new move that lets you get creatures onto Yoshi's back. This seems to be the main way you'll interact with the world to help Mr. E (the talking book) remember what lives inside his pages.

Instead of just jumping on enemies, you're encouraged to experiment. You can eat them, toss an egg their way, or carry them around to see how they react. Once you finish your research on a creature, you head back to Mr. E and give it a name. You can pick whatever you want or ask the book for a suggestion.

Exploring chapters from cover to cover

The trailer also shows off the variety of the chapters you'll be exploring. You'll move through mountaintops and seaside spots, encountering everything from singing creatures to fluffy ones that start multiplying when you touch them.

It's not just a straight line to the end of the stage. It's about poking around to find every surprise hidden in the environment.

Bowser Jr. and Kamek are on the trail

We also got our first look at how Bowser Jr. and Kamek fit into the story. They aren't just there for a cameo; they’re actually searching for their own discoveries inside the book.

Seeing them wander through the pages definitely looks like it will complicate Yoshi's research. You'll have to keep an eye on where their trail leads as you progress through the chapters.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book looks like a great change of pace

If you have amiibo, you can scan them to get fortunes and tokens. These tokens give you hints for finding creatures you haven't spotted yet, which helps if you're trying to catalogue everything.

I've always liked the slower pace of the Yoshi series, and this research cycle seems to fit that perfectly. It isn't just about reaching the end of the stage; it's about seeing how everything in the environment reacts to you. May 21 is right around the corner, and I’m looking forward to checking out Mr. E’s book myself.
