I've gone through dozens of gaming mice since I started playing PC games in the eighties. Most of them end up in a drawer. The SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2 updates a familiar lightweight design with modern internals. I need something that keeps up whether I am working or jumping into a quick match.
If you're wondering if it earns a spot on your desk, the answer is yes, provided you prefer a claw grip. At $149.99 CAD ($109.99 USD), it bridges the gap between budget entries and expensive professional gear by packing an accurate 26K sensor and a 4000 Hz polling rate. It gives you high-end responsiveness. It avoids a massive price tag.

A Honeycomb Shell Built for Claw Grips
The outer plastic retains the honeycomb pattern from previous versions. This keeps it light at 68g, which makes quick movements easy. I found the IP54 water and dust resistance rating genuinely useful. It protects the internals from accidental spills. You don't have to worry about a knocked-over drink ruining your match. It is a real lifesaver.
The shape flares out dramatically at the back. When I tried to use a fingertip grip, the rear pushed my thumb and pinky too far forward. It forced my hand into an awkward angle. That hurts your control. Changing to a claw grip fixes the problem entirely. The flared back lets you pull the mouse firmly against the base of your hand for excellent control. I noticed the textured plastic is slightly slippery.
Without rubber side grips, keeping a firm hold takes a little extra effort. The side buttons are also quite long. During a frantic round in Counter-Strike 2, I gripped the sides too tightly and accidentally hit the forward button. It pulled out my knife instead of my rifle. I got eliminated instantly. You've got to be careful with your finger placement.

High Polling Rates Drain the Battery
SteelSeries packed a massive battery inside this 68g frame. Using the Bluetooth connection, I got close to 200 hours of use before needing a charge. I took it on a weekend trip using Bluetooth with my laptop and left the cable at home. It never died. Connecting via the 2.4GHz USB-C receiver at the default 1000 Hz polling rate yields about 120 hours. That is plenty of time.
SteelSeries includes a handy USB-C to USB-C adapter. You plug the wireless receiver into it, then run the braided cable to your PC. It keeps the receiver right on your desk. It is a smart inclusion. Turning on the 4000 Hz mode changes things completely. The higher polling rate communicates with your PC four times as often, dropping input delay to nearly zero. I noticed a clear difference in tracking accuracy when targeting enemies in fast-paced shooters.
The tradeoff is battery drain. Operating at 4000 Hz cuts your playtime down to roughly 35 hours. That is a massive drop. You'll need to plug in the braided USB-A to USB-C cable much more frequently if you demand absolute peak performance.
SteelSeries GG Software Is Mandatory
You have to install the SteelSeries GG app to get the most out of this mouse. Out of the box, the default DPI steps are 400, 800, 1600, 2400, and 3200. I found 1600 too slow and 2400 too fast for my usual preferences. You can't change these intervals without the app. It is a minor annoyance.
Once installed, the software opens up plenty of customization. You can adjust the lift-off distance to match how high you pick up your hand during broad swipes. The best part is the 3D Aim Trainer. It drops you into a ten-minute minigame designed to optimize your sensitivity.
It mimics specific games down to individual weapons. I ran the Counter-Strike 2 module. It tweaked my numbers perfectly. You can even convert that sensitivity to other shooters. It is highly useful.

The SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2 Survives the Daily Grind
This is a dependable option for anyone wanting competitive features in a durable package. I dragged it across different desks and mousepads. The large PTFE feet glided perfectly across my bare wooden desk and a thick cloth mat alike. It offers top-tier sensor capabilities and long battery life for a reasonable price.
The shape is definitely polarizing. If you rely on a palm or fingertip grip, the wide rear section will likely cause discomfort. For claw grip users, the SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2 provides accurate tracking and a rugged build that easily handles the abuse of daily gaming.
