The wait is almost over. Valve just confirmed the new Steam Controller officially launches worldwide on May 4, 2026. If you have been following the news since the Steam Machine announcement last November, this is the first major piece of that puzzle. It costs $149 CAD and comes with a magnetic charging puck that doubles as the wireless receiver.

TMR Thumbsticks and the Return of Trackpads

We knew Valve was working on a new input device, but the final details are exactly what you want to see. Looking at the specs, the biggest upgrade over the original 2015 controller is the move to next-generation magnetic thumbsticks with TMR technology. That means no stick drift, which is practically a requirement for a premium controller in 2026.

Valve also kept the dual trackpads, but this time they sit alongside full-sized controls and grip buttons. You also get Grip Sense gyro, making it a great match for the Steam Deck or anyone running a traditional PC setup. I am curious to see how the trackpads hold up for strategy games compared to the Deck's built-in pads once I actually get my hands on it.

The 2026 Steam Controller uses the same layout as the Steam Deck, placing the trackpads right next to the thumbsticks.

That Magnetic Charging Puck

The most interesting choice here isn't on the controller itself. Valve includes a small puck in the box that acts as the wireless transmitter for a fast, stable connection. When you are done gaming, the controller snaps onto the puck magnetically to charge.

Valve promises over 35 hours of gameplay on a single charge. That puts it well ahead of the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller but slightly behind the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller.

Valve Readies the Steam Controller For a May Launch

Valve explicitly mentioned that this controller works natively with the upcoming Steam Machine and Steam Frame. If Valve wants the Steam Machine to genuinely compete for living room space this time around, getting the controller right is the first massive hurdle.

Hitting a $149 CAD price point puts it right in line with the premium controller market. Orders open at 10 a.m. Pacific on May 4th directly through Steam, and I'll be watching closely to see if they sell out on day one.

Is the move to TMR thumbsticks enough to get you to drop $149 CAD on launch day, or are you just happy to see those trackpads finally make a comeback? Let me know if you're planning to grab the new Steam controller in the comments.
