If you love cozy, collection-based farming games with heartwarming friendships, then Collector's Cove might be exactly what you're looking for.

Let's dive in!

Sailing Away on a Giant Sea Creature

The story starts with your parents being away on a long adventure, while your uncle looks after you. One day, you decide it's finally time to set off on your own, and your uncle saw it coming. So he built you a boat mounted on top of a sea creature to travel on, and that's where it all begins!

Before anything else, you get to customize your character. Nothing too crazy, but I liked the options. Same goes for your sea creature. I named mine Poppy, in memory of my cat who passed last year, so I made sure to take very good care of it. You also eventually unlock new accessories for both yourself and your creature, which is a fun perk as you progress.

Climbing the Collector's Rank

The main objective is to reach a high enough Collector's Rank to access a mysterious location beyond Collector's Cove. I really like the sense of direction in this game; there's always a clear quest guiding you, whether it's completing a task, hitting a certain rank, or building something specific. You never feel lost.

Exploration and Resource Gathering

At first glance, you might think Collector's Cove is mostly a farming game, but that's just scratching the surface. The reason you're traveling on your sea friend is because you can explore the entire world. You'll navigate to islands and gather resources: chopping wood, mining rocks, digging soil, fishing, and occasionally finding treasure.

Moving Between Islands

Once you've stripped an island clean, you move on to the next. And when the whole map is cleared, you can generate a brand new one with fresh islands. Resources can also be found out at sea. Your traveling companion will alert you when they spot some nearby. Then you hop on your plunger device and shoot them to pick them up.

Farming on the Boat

And yes, you can farm right on your boat! You'll need to build farming space with your resources first, then plant seeds, water them occasionally, and eventually harvest your crops. Farming is useful for a lot of things. You can turn vegetables into fish bait or sell them for resources.

Trading with the Three Uncles

Speaking of selling, you can summon merchants by ringing a bell. There are three in total, and they're all your uncles, which is hilarious. One buys and sells seeds for your garden. The second lets you trade resources if you're running low on something specific.

The third uncle is the fun one. He unlocks permanent upgrades: new accessories, new buildable items, hints on catching rare fish, and more. You exchange certain resources to unlock them, so it's a satisfying ongoing side objective.

Addictive Progression and Fishing Mechanics

The ranking system is built around collecting. The more vegetables, fish, plants, and other items you discover, the more you rank up. And ranking up unlocks new items, better skills, and more. It's a great progression loop, because you're always curious about what the next rank will bring.

There are also some deeper, addictive mechanics layered in. Fishing is a great example: you first catch a certain amount of a specific fish, which lets you craft its bait. Then you catch three with that bait to unlock a hint about its ultimate form. Tracking that last one down, after all that effort, is incredibly satisfying. And as a bonus, feeding it to your sea creature increases one of their skills.

The Collector's Cove Experience Is a Cozy Masterpiece on PC

All in all, I've really enjoyed my time with Collector's Cove, and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. Once you get in the groove, it's hard to stop. I'm pretty picky when it comes to cozy farming games, but this one nails it; there's always something to do, it never feels overwhelming, and the quests keep you pointed in the right direction.

There's no time limit on anything, so it's a perfect game for when you just want to unwind. If you are looking for more relaxing titles, you can browse our other indie game reviews for your next adventure. Give Collector's Cove a try if that sounds like your kind of thing.
