| Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage brings the legendary 3D fighting series to Nintendo hardware for the first time. |
By Jon Scarr
It's been a long road for Sega fans on Nintendo hardware, but the wait is over. Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage is out today on Nintendo Switch 2. While fighters on other platforms have had their turn, this marks the first time the 3D series has landed on a Nintendo console. I’ve played Sega games since the 80s. Seeing Akira and the gang on a Nintendo screen is a massive moment for me.
Sega didn't just put out an old port for this launch. This version is a complete package with modern tools like full cross-play. You can jump into matches against players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. They also included rollback netcode support. That is a must for any serious competitive fighter. It makes online play feel much more responsive. This is exactly what the community wanted.
New Single-Player Journey
If you're looking for something more than just online matches, there's a single-player journey called World Stage. It's a mode where you take on rivals to prove you're the top fighter. Sega also added new moves, combos, and balance updates to keep the action interesting for veterans. I'm especially happy to see these additions. They show Sega is still looking after the game years after its first release.
For those of you on the fence, there's a free demo out now on the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It gives you access to six fighters: Wolf, Jacky, Eileen, Pai, Goh, and Jean. You can try out the Arcade mode, Training, and the start of the World Stage journey.
Sega Hardware Customization
Sega is also giving a little something extra to Nintendo fans. If you pick up any edition for the Nintendo Switch 2, you get a "Genesis" customization item for all 19 characters at no extra cost. I grew up with the 16-bit era. Seeing that classic hardware in the game is a great touch.
In Canada, the standard digital edition is $29.99 CAD. If you want the full set, the 30th Anniversary Edition is $69.99 CAD. The 30th Anniversary version adds the Legendary Pack, Yakuza series items, and a collection of soundtracks and artwork. The physical version even comes with a double-sided poster. It features the original Virtua Fighter art on one side.
