Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream finally has a new overview trailer and a free game demo out today. I’ve been waiting for a new entry in this series for over a decade now, and today’s news didn’t disappoint. When I first heard the game was headed to the Nintendo Switch, I was thrilled to see the over the top silliness return. It’s great to see Nintendo bringing that same quirky charm to both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2.

The full game launches on April 16, and it’s looking like a perfect fit for handheld play. You’ll act as the caretaker of an island where your custom Mii characters live, and trust me, they’ll get into plenty of drama.

Whether they’re falling in love or getting into bizarre arguments, you never really know what you’re going to see when you log in. You should definitely check out the new overview trailer below to see some of these hilarious interactions in action.

Jump into the Welcome Version Demo

If you’re as impatient as I am, you don't have to wait until next month to start your trip, though. The "Welcome Version" demo is out on the Nintendo eShop right now. It lets you create up to three Mii characters and get a head start on your island. I love that your progress carries over to the full game at launch, so your hard work won't go to waste.

Nintendo’s also throwing in a fun bonus for finishing the demo content. You’ll unlock a hamster costume for your Mii characters in a random colour. You’ll be able to find this outfit in the full game later on, but it’s a nice little reward for jumping in early. It’s exactly the kind of silly touch that makes Tomodachi Life so special.

Making Your Miis and Their World

The best part of the game is definitely the Mii characters themselves. You can make them as quirky as you want by designing their look, personality, and even their voice. This time around, the Mii Maker is even deeper. It lets you draw on their faces or even create 2D cutouts of random objects. I’m looking forward to seeing how these custom traits drive the weird interactions on the island.

You’ve also got a lot more freedom with the island aesthetic this time. You can move shops, homes, and trees around whenever you feel like it. You can even expand the land area as your population grows. It feels like a much better balance between a social sim and a creative toolbox than the older games.

Living the Dream Long-Term

What I’m most excited about is how the island evolves over time. As you help your Miis and earn "Warm Fuzzies," you’ll level up the island and unlock the Wish Fountain. This is where the game really starts to open up with new buildings and rewards. Time moves in sync with the real world, so there’s always a reason to pop back in and see who’s started a new friendship. I can’t wait to get back into this world and enjoy some "Mii time" on the Nintendo Switch.
