| The latest 007 First Light developer diary shifts focus to Bond’s cast and the characters shaping his early MI6 story. |
By Jon Scarr
IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios have released the second episode of the Beyond the Light developer diary series for 007 First Light. This new video puts the focus on the cast and the characters shaping this younger version of James Bond.
This update centres on Bond’s relationships and the people who shape him early on. It includes comments from the development team and cast members such as Patrick Gibson as James Bond, Noemie Nakai as Agent Roth, Kiera Lester as Moneypenny, and Alastair McKenzie as Q.
IO Interactive is treating 007 First Light as a true origin story. Bond and Moneypenny meet at an earlier stage in their relationship, before the version most fans know has fully taken shape. There is still chemistry between them. This version simply shows two people who are still learning how they work together.
That same approach carries through the wider MI6 cast. M, Greenway, and Moneypenny each reflect a different part of Bond’s early development. Q also has a larger part in that process than usual. He is more than the person handing over gadgets. He helps shape Bond’s style and instincts, tying that relationship to classic Bond details such as the watch and the car.
Building Bond’s World Around The Cast
Q is also presented as a teacher and mentor. He helps Bond learn how to operate as an agent while also trying to keep him under control. That gives the character a more active place in Bond’s early years instead of leaving him in a support role.
The diary also gives more context around Greenway and M. Greenway is introduced as a new mentor figure who does not want Bond in the program and sees him as someone who got lucky. M, by contrast, is younger and ambitious. She is written as someone who sees potential in Bond before others around her do. That setup gives Bond something to push against inside MI6, with part of the story built around proving he belongs there.
The episode also spends time on how IO Interactive is building these characters. The team starts with character bios. From there, it builds wardrobe and visual direction, then moves into actor scanning, facial reconstruction, and animation as performances are brought into the game. Much of that work comes down to small expressions, facial movement, and the details that help each performance carry over into gameplay and cinematics.
For a Bond game built around a new beginning, this update adds useful context. The first reveal introduced the broader setup. This second diary gives you a better sense of how IO Interactive wants this Bond to connect with the people around him. That will help define this version of 007 just as much as the action.
007 First Light is set to release on May 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox ROG Ally X, Xbox ROG Ally, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
