According to a report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, PlayStation is shutting down Bluepoint Games, the Austin-based studio known for rebuilding classic titles like Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus for modern hardware.
The closure follows what PlayStation described as a recent business review and will result in roughly 70 employees losing their jobs. Bluepoint officially closes next month, ending a nearly two-decade run that helped define how older games could be rebuilt for new generations.
A Studio Known for Rebuilding Gaming History
Bluepoint Games built its reputation on carefully recreating older titles while preserving what made them memorable. The studio focused on bringing past releases forward with modern visuals, performance improvements, and technical upgrades.
One of its most recognized projects was the 2020 remake of Demon’s Souls, which launched alongside PlayStation 5. That release rebuilt the original PlayStation 3 title with fully updated visuals, faster loading, and improved performance, helping introduce the game to a new audience.
Before that, Bluepoint handled the Shadow of the Colossus remake for PlayStation 4 and contributed to remastered versions of the Uncharted collection. These projects helped keep older PlayStation releases accessible on newer hardware.
Founded in 2006 and based in Austin, Texas, Bluepoint built its identity around restoration and technical reconstruction rather than creating entirely new original titles.
Acquisition and the Live-Service Project Cancellation
PlayStation acquired Bluepoint Games in 2021, shortly after the release of Demon’s Souls. The acquisition strengthened PlayStation’s internal studio network and reinforced its investment in both remakes and long-term development.
After the acquisition, Bluepoint co-developed God of War Ragnarök. The studio later began work on a live-service God of War project, which Bloomberg previously reported was canceled in early 2025.
At the time, PlayStation said it was evaluating Bluepoint’s future direction and determining its next project. That uncertainty ultimately led to the studio’s closure.
A Loss for One of PlayStation’s Most Specialized Teams
Bluepoint played a unique role within PlayStation’s studio network. Its work helped bring older releases forward in ways that preserved their original design while making them accessible on newer hardware.
The studio’s closure reflects broader changes inside PlayStation as it continues adjusting its internal development structure and long-term priorities.
Bluepoint’s remakes helped connect multiple PlayStation generations. With the studio closing next month, PlayStation loses one of its most experienced teams focused on rebuilding legacy titles for modern platforms.
