PlayStation used its latest State of Play to deliver two major updates for God of War. Santa Monica Studio announced that a remake of the original Greek-era trilogy is now in development, while a brand-new side project, God of War: Sons of Sparta, is available today on PlayStation 5.

The announcements arrive as the series approaches its 20th anniversary in March 2026, closing out the celebration with both a look back at Kratos’ origins and a new release that explores an earlier chapter of his life.

God of War Trilogy Remake Is Officially in Development

Santa Monica Studio confirmed that the original God of War trilogy is being remade, marking the first time the PS2-era games are being rebuilt rather than re-released. The studio emphasized that the project is still very early in development, with no release window or gameplay details shared yet.

The reveal featured TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos during the Greek saga, acknowledging the role he played in shaping the character’s early years. Beyond that, the studio made it clear that updates will take time, and that it will be a while before anything more concrete is shown.

For long-time fans, the announcement signals a renewed focus on the era that defined God of War before the series shifted toward Norse mythology. For now, though, the remake remains a longer-term project rather than something close to release.

God of War: Sons of Sparta Is Out Now

Alongside the remake news, Santa Monica Studio also revealed God of War: Sons of Sparta, a new 2D action platformer developed in partnership with Mega Cat Studios. Unlike the trilogy remake, this project isn’t a tease for the future. It’s available now on PlayStation 5.

Sons of Sparta tells a canon story set during Kratos’ youth, focusing on his time training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos. The game is narrated by TC Carson, returning to voice Kratos for the first time in over a decade, and features writing support from the same Santa Monica Studio team behind God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök.

Gameplay shifts the series into a side-scrolling format, with Kratos using a spear, shield, and a set of divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus. Enemies draw from Greek mythology, blending familiar faces with new creatures created specifically for this project. The visual style uses detailed, hand-drawn pixel animation instead of the cinematic presentation seen in the mainline entries.

Two Different Directions for the Series

These announcements approach the series from different angles. The Greek trilogy remake revisits where God of War began, even if it’s still some distance from release. Sons of Sparta experiments with a smaller-scale format that explores Kratos’ past without retreading the main games.

One project focuses on rebuilding the series’ foundations, while the other tries something new within familiar mythology. As God of War approaches its 20th year, PlayStation is using both to keep the franchise present while opening the door to different kinds of experiences.
