| James Bond during an early mission in 007 First Light. |
By Juli Scarr
IO Interactive has released a new cinematic story trailer for 007 First Light, giving a clearer look at James Bond at the very start of his career. The trailer debuted during PlayStation’s latest State of Play and focuses on how Bond is first pulled into MI6 and the world he’s stepping into.
007 First Light launches on May 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox ROG Ally X, Xbox ROG Ally, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Pre-orders are currently live, including Collector’s and Legacy editions.
Bond at the Start of His Career
The trailer centres on Bond before he’s fully established inside MI6. After drawing attention during a dangerous operation in Iceland, he’s recruited into the revived 00 programme and placed into formal training. This version of Bond is capable, but inexperienced, still learning how to operate within MI6 rather than acting entirely on instinct.
That adjustment shows up quickly. Bond’s tendency to rely on his own judgment runs into an organisation built around structure, rules, and hierarchy, creating pressure as he learns what’s expected of him.
Bond and His Instructor Don’t See Eye to Eye
Inside MI6, Bond finds support from M, who recognizes his ability to handle unstable situations. At the same time, he clashes with John Greenway, a former 00 agent now responsible for training the programme’s next generation. Greenway’s strict, disciplined approach doesn’t line up with how Bond reacts in the field.
Those differences become harder to ignore when the programme faces its first real challenge. The return of 009, a former British operative who has gone rogue, forces Bond and Greenway to work together despite their opposing views.
A Chase That Moves Beyond MI6
Bond’s pursuit takes him across multiple locations, from remote mountain regions to underground markets where information and loyalty are uncertain. Along the way, he encounters figures like Bawma and Charlotte Roth, characters whose intentions aren’t immediately clear and whose trust isn’t guaranteed.
These moments put Bond in situations where he has to make decisions with limited information and deal with the consequences that follow.
Early Days Inside the 00 Programme
What comes through most clearly is where Bond is in his career. He’s been brought into MI6, pushed into the 00 programme, and put into situations where mistakes have consequences. The trailer doesn’t rush him toward the version people already recognize.
Instead, it stays with the early stretch of that process. Training, pressure, and learning how this world works take priority, showing Bond before the role fully settles into place.
After watching the trailer, what stands out to you most about this take on James Bond?
