Xbox has announced the latest cohort for Xbox Game Camp Africa, and this year’s intake comes with a notable change. After receiving a strong response from developers across the region, Xbox confirmed it has doubled the size of the program, expanding from eight to 18 studios spanning 12 African countries.

The update was shared by Xbox Game Camp Senior Director Peter Zetterberg, who said the decision was driven by the quality and volume of applications. Rather than limiting the program to its original scope, Xbox opted to scale it up for this cycle. The third Xbox Game Camp Africa cohort will run for six weeks later this year.

Xbox Game Camp Africa Overview

Xbox Game Camp Africa is a developer mentorship and support program aimed at early-stage and independent studios across Africa that already have projects in development. The initiative is run by Xbox as part of its broader developer outreach efforts and focuses on practical guidance rather than funding announcements or publishing deals.

Studios selected for the program receive hands-on mentorship from Xbox and Microsoft teams, technical support around development tools and workflows, and business guidance related to production planning, pitching, and long-term sustainability. The goal is to help teams strengthen their projects and better position themselves for future opportunities in the global games industry.

Rather than functioning as a traditional accelerator, Game Camp Africa is built around access and long-term support, particularly for studios operating in regions where direct industry connections and resources can be harder to come by.

A Larger Commitment From Xbox

Doubling the number of participating studios signals that Xbox sees Game Camp Africa as more than a short-term initiative. Expanding the program increases access to mentorship and technical support while broadening Xbox’s engagement with developers across multiple regions.

At a time when much of the industry is dealing with studio closures and reduced investment, this move stands out as a longer-term commitment to emerging development communities. For Xbox, it also reinforces a strategy focused on building relationships with smaller studios earlier in the development process, before projects reach the pitching or publishing stage.

Xbox Game Camp Africa is expected to begin later this year, with participating studios working directly with Xbox and Microsoft teams throughout the six-week program.
