Studio closures have become an all-too-familiar part of the games industry lately. Earlier today, Ubisoft decided to close its Halifax location, another reminder of how quickly teams can be disrupted even when projects are still moving forward.

That context makes this news, all that much more imporant. Following Netflix's closure of Boss Fight Entertainment in late 2025, a core group of veteran developers made a deliberate decision to stay together. Rather than immediately dispersing across the industry, they chose to preserve the working relationships they had already spent years building.

That decision has now led to the launch of Sunwise Games, a newly announced independent studio formed largely by former Boss Fight developers.

Choosing Continuity Instead of Starting Over

Boss Fight Entertainment became part of Netflix’s internal games push in 2022. Over the years, the studio shipped multiple titles and most recently worked on Squid Game: Unleashed, which reached a large global audience shortly before the studio was closed as Netflix adjusted its broader gaming strategy.

For many teams, that kind of closure marks a hard stop. In this case, it became a moment of reassessment.

According to Sunwise co-founder Irin Berry, the developers who chose to remain together already understood how they worked as a unit. They had experience shipping complex games, supporting live operations, and scaling projects for large player bases. More importantly, they trusted one another’s judgment and collaboration.

Rather than trying to rebuild that chemistry elsewhere, 26 developers opted to move forward together under a new studio banner.

What Sunwise Games Is Aiming to Build

Sunwise Games is positioning itself as a PC-first studio with a clear creative focus. The team has described its goal as building games centered on deep mechanics, long-term engagement, and progression systems that reward sustained play rather than short-term hooks.

Just as important is what the studio isn’t trying to be.

Sunwise isn’t structured for rapid growth or trend chasing. It’s intentionally small, senior-led, and designed for sustainability, with most of the team bringing prior experience in shipping and supporting games at scale. That background influences early creative and technical decisions in ways newer teams often don’t have the luxury to consider.

First Project Already Underway

Development is already underway on Sunwise Games’ first project, though details remain under wraps for now. The team has confirmed the game is being designed with PC as the primary platform, rather than as a secondary release.

Berry has also indicated that Sunwise plans to begin reconnecting with partners and investors in early 2026, including meetings around industry events such as DICE Summit. For a newly announced studio, that signals confidence in both the team and its direction.

What Comes Next for Sunwise Games

Sunwise Games enters the industry at a moment when many developers are being forced to start over in less-than-ideal conditions. In this case, a team chose continuity instead.

The studio’s formation reflects a belief that shared experience, trust, and proven collaboration still matter in modern game development. Whether that approach pays off will depend on what Sunwise ships next, but the foundation it’s built on is already clear.
