By Jon Scarr
Limited Run Games is bringing a pair of late-90s brawlers back into the spotlight with the announcement of the Fighting Force Collection, available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
Originally released in 1997 and 1999, Fighting Force and Fighting Force 2 were part of that short but memorable era when 3D beat-’em-ups were still finding their footing. The games focused on close-range street fights, interactive environments, and a more cinematic feel that separated them from the usual side-scrolling brawlers.
A Return to 90s-Style Brawling
The original Fighting Force puts you in control of Hawk Manson or one of three other characters, each with their own strengths and move sets. The focus is on close-quarters combat, environmental destruction, and using whatever happens to be nearby to clear out enemies.
You can jump in on your own or with a friend, working through stages that move between indoor and outdoor settings. It’s fast, messy, and very much rooted in how action games were built in the late 90s.
Fighting Force 2 takes a slightly different approach. The sequel shifts toward more structured missions and places a bigger emphasis on ranged combat and set-piece encounters. It also introduces more detailed environments and a wider variety of weapons, giving it a more tactical feel while still keeping the series’ core identity intact.
What’s Included in the Collection
The Fighting Force Collection includes:
- Both Fighting Force and Fighting Force 2
- Multiple playable characters with unique abilities
- Local co-op support
- A wide range of melee weapons and firearms
- Fully 3D environments inspired by late-90s action games
The collection focuses on preserving the original experience rather than reinventing it, making this more of a faithful return than a full remake.
Why This Release Makes Sense Now
There’s been a renewed interest in late-90s and early-2000s action games, especially those that experimented with early 3D design. Fighting Force fits right into that era, combining arcade-style brawling with ideas that would later become more common across the genre.
For longtime fans, this release is a chance to revisit a cult favourite. For newer players, it’s an opportunity to experience a piece of gaming history that helped shape how action games evolved.
The Fighting Force Collection is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
