New Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Overview Trailer Drops With Over 7 Minutes of New Gameplay

By Jon Scarr

Nintendo surprised everyone again today with a brand new look at Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The new overview trailer dropped the same morning early previews went live, making it one of the busiest days yet for Samus fans. It follows last week’s Survive trailer, which gave us a sharp snapshot of Viewros and some of the threats waiting there. If you missed that one, you can check out my full breakdown here: Nintendo Drops New "Survive" Trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

This new trailer is over seven minutes long and gives a much clearer sense of how Samus’ next mission is shaping up. It digs into her abilities, the layout of the planet, and the new systems that guide how you explore. Watching both trailers back to back makes the game feel a lot more real now that we are only weeks away. I watched the new footage a few times already, and it hits harder than I expected.

What the New Metroid Prime 4 Overview Trailer Shows

The new overview trailer gives the clearest picture yet of Samus’ situation at the start of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. It opens with the attack on the Galactic Federation UTO Research Center, confirming that Sylux is the source of the distress call Samus responds to. The trailer then shifts to Viewros, the unfamiliar planet where she wakes up after the disaster, setting the stage for her next mission.

Viewros looks huge and full of different regions to explore. The video walks through several areas, including jungles, a storm-covered factory, an icebound research lab, and a volcanic facility. All of these locations connect through Sol Valley, a central desert that acts as the main hub. It feels like a big shift from how past Prime games handled exploration, and it was one of the things that stood out to me while watching the trailer.

The overview also highlights Samus’ classic tools, including the Scan Visor, Power Beam, Missiles, and Morph Ball. There is a fast rhythm to how she switches between them, which gives the game a nice sense of flow. The new Psychic Abilities might be the biggest addition, since they let her interact with machinery, manipulate energy, and tackle puzzles in new ways. They look like the type of upgrade that could reshape how you approach each section of the map.

Exploring Viewros With Vi-O-La

One of the biggest surprises in the new trailer is Vi-O-La, a vehicle left behind by an ancient civilization on Viewros. Sol Valley acts as the desert hub connecting the planet’s regions, and Vi-O-La looks like the key to crossing it quickly. The trailer shows Samus summoning it based on where she is, which should make moving between areas feel smooth instead of slow.

The footage shows a few moments of Vi-O-La in action. Samus uses it to dodge incoming attacks and smash through crystal clusters scattered across the sand. Breaking those crystals gives you the energy needed for the journey ahead, which adds a small loop to the way you move through Sol Valley. It looks simple on the surface, but I liked how it breaks up the pace and adds a different style of movement.

Seeing a vehicle used this way in a Metroid Prime game honestly made me pause for a second. It is not something I expected them to focus on, and it gives the world a slightly different rhythm. The planet feels bigger with the Vi-O-La in the mix, almost like the game wants you to treat the desert as its own challenge instead of just another path between locations.

Samus’ Abilities Look Familiar in a Good Way

Watching Samus swap between her tools in the new trailer reminded me why the Prime series looks so smooth when it is firing on all cylinders. The Scan Visor, Power Beam, Missiles, and Morph Ball all show up here, and the way she moves between them looks quick and confident. It has that classic Prime rhythm where you can scan something, slide into Morph Ball mode, and jump right into a fight without missing a beat.

The new Psychic Abilities are the part that really caught my eye. The trailer shows Samus using them to move energy, interact with machinery, and solve environmental puzzles. It looks like these abilities fit alongside her usual upgrades instead of replacing them. That mix makes the world feel more interactive, and it gives each section of Viewros a bit more flexibility in how you approach it.

Seeing all of this together made me more curious about how the game layers upgrades over time. The trailer only gives us short examples, but the flow between abilities already feels smoother than I expected. It is a small detail, but it says a lot about how the adventure might play once everything starts unlocking.

This Trailer Made the Wait for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Feel Real

After watching this new overview trailer, the game finally feels close. Seeing more of Viewros, the different regions, and how Samus’ abilities come together made the whole picture a lot clearer. I kept replaying a few moments just to catch all the small touches, and it left me more curious about how the full adventure will flow when everything starts opening up.

The timing of this drop also added to the excitement. Getting a long trailer on the same day Metroid Prime 4 previews went live made the morning feel packed, and it was the first time I felt the countdown to December really hit. We have seen Metroid Prime 4 in short bursts before, but this is the best look yet at how the game actually plays.

With Metroid Prime 4: Beyond launching on December 4 for both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, today’s footage was a solid reminder of how long fans have been waiting. If this trailer is anything to go by, the final stretch should be fun to follow. I can't wait to get my hands on Metroid Prime 4 on December 4th!
