4Scarrs Gaming Review: Style Savvy Fashion Forward

By Juli Scarr

Have you ever dreamed of managing your own boutique, designing killer clothes fit for a fashionista, styling some wicked hair, mastering the art of make-up, or becoming the next top model? Well, with Style Savvy: Fashion Forward on the Nintendo 3DS you can do all that and more—the world is your runway.

As with the previous two games in the Style Savvy series, Style Savvy: Fashion Forward builds upon previous games, and improves in some of the most fresh and fun ways in the series to date.

Learning the ins and outs of the fashion world

Set in Beaumonde City, packed with townspeople, you’ll travel around the city to talk with locals and build relationships with people and the styles they love. In order to succeed, you’ll need to learn the ins and outs of the fashion world by mastering five different professions. These professions range from a boutique manger to a hair stylist to a makeup artist to a designer, and a model.

Each profession has clear unique gameplay elements that makes playing each role fun. For instance, as a boutique manager you can recommend clothing to your clients based upon personal styles and customers’ requests. On the other hand, as a designer you’ll talk to locals around the town and discover new patterns, and find out what’s “hot” in the fashion world.

Amazing amount of content and creativity

With over 19,000 pieces of clothing / accessories, and an awesome in-game Fashion 101 guide to learn about real-world fashion topics—Style Savvy: Fashion Forward allows you to have a virtually unlimited fun. One of my favourite modes in Style Savvy: Fashion Forward is the in-game fashion show, which allows you to influence other town locals who eventually will start wearing your unique creations. The moment when you hear the crow roar and first discover someone else wearing your signature style, will have you grinning from ear to ear.

A really neat mode that has been added to Style Savvy: Fashion Forward is called Caprice Chalet. In this mode, you can use special miniature furniture that the locals give you after you have completed a task for them. Here you can make your own rooms and shops with these miniature items and when you are done, it all comes to life in the game. Better yet, you can share these rooms with friends online, and exchange them through StreetPass.

Surprisingly, Miiverse has been integrated into Style Savvy: Fashion Forward in a clever and unique way. The goal of these contests is simple; you decide the theme and other players on Miiverse will submit photos in hopes of winning. Once your contest has come to a close, you must decide who the winner is—let’s just say that I’ve encountered a few rather unique entries that made me smile.

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward supports a variety of different amiibo figures such as Zelda, Princess Peach, Samus, and the Inkling Girl. Once you tap any of the supported amiibo on the screen, you’ll instantly unlock clothing items that are inspired by that particular character. Super cool!

Fantastic presentation with bright and colourful visuals

I was impressed with Style Savvy: Fashion Forward’s visuals and music on the Nintendo 3DS. The graphics are sharp, and the environments along with the characters are bright and colourful. The 3D effect was neat in that it gave the shops and characters depth that was easy on my eyes.

The soundtrack added its own unique beat that always seems to fit right in with the game’s atmosphere. It is clear that Syn Sophia put a lot of time and thought into Style Savvy: Fashion Forward’s overall presentation.

Final thoughts

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward is a solid entry into the Style Savvy game series that fans will more than enjoy. It’s a game that allows you to unwind after a stressful day at work and have fun with your creative side. I was shocked at the amount of content that Syn Sophia and Nintendo have included with this game, with over 19,000 items you’ll busy playing for a long time to come.
